Anatomy of a Hostess Club Bill.

Nobody gets scammed at a legitimate kyabakura. They get surprised — by a billing system every Japanese salaryman learns at 23 and nobody ever explains to visitors. Here are the five lines, the real math, and where the meter actually runs.

What you're actually buying

A kyabakura sells conversation with the meter running. A hostess sits with you, pours your drinks, laughs at your jokes, and is extraordinarily good at making an hour feel like ten minutes. There is no other product — and knowing that one fact makes the whole bill make sense, because every line on it is a way of billing time and attention.

The five lines

YOUShe keeps asking if she can get a drink. It's ¥1,500. Is it rude to say no??
JAD"One more later" is a complete sentence. She's a professional — she hears it fifty times a night and likes you exactly the same afterward.
YOUSo the drinks are how she gets paid?
JADPartly, yes — her drink count is her scoreboard. Buy one early because you want to, not four because you couldn't say no. That single habit is the difference between the two receipts below.

The real math

Same club, same menu, same 90 minutes — played two ways:

★ CAREFUL NIGHT — 90 MIN
SET (90 MIN)¥7,000
SHIMEI
YOUR DRINKSINCL.
HER DRINK ×1¥1,500
SVC 25% + LATE 10%¥2,900
TOTAL≈ ¥11,400
★ GENEROUS NIGHT — SAME 90 MIN
SET (90 MIN)¥7,000
SHIMEI¥2,000
YOUR DRINKS ×3¥2,400
HER DRINKS ×4¥6,000
SVC 25% + LATE 10%¥6,000
TOTAL≈ ¥23,400
SAME MENU. YOUR CHOICES.
CONSENSUS · 22 REPORTS · 90 DAYS The median first-hour total reported for Kabukicho girls bars runs around ¥11,000 — almost exactly the careful receipt. The ¥20,000+ stories are nearly always lines 2 and 3, agreed to one smiling yes at a time.

Note what's not in the math: trickery. Both receipts are legitimate. The difference is entirely decisions made after sitting down — which is why honest clubs and predatory ones can share the same menu format.

The three questions that keep you on receipt one

  1. 料金は全部でいくらですか? — "What's the all-in total?" Asked at the door, before sitting. The highest-value sentence in Japanese nightlife.
  2. セットに何が含まれますか? — "What does the set include?" Your drinks? How many? Which bottle?
  3. ラストオーダーはいつですか? — "When's last order?" Sets renew in units. Know when yours ends; staying becomes a choice, not a surprise.

All three live on the phrase board as one-tap copies.

For the ladies: the mirror world

YOUHost clubs. The posters are everywhere. First visit ¥5,000 — real or trap?
JADReal! And genuinely fun as theater. It's the second visit that's engineered — the discount is the top of a funnel that ends in champagne calls with more zeros than your rent.
YOUSo go once, enjoy it, and treat my host like a Disney cast member?
JADYou just wrote the guide for us.
